Suicide of J.George Lowery, 1937

New Jersey Mirror Nov 3 1937: Failing in one attempt, J. George Lowery, 58, of Manahawkin, committed suicide early yesterday the same way his brother ended his life two years ago. Lowery, a laborer, who lived alone on Stafford avenue, Manahawkin, stabbed himself twice over the heart with a butcher knife. Then he tied a rope around a second-floor bannister, the other end around his neck, and jumped. Lowery's brother, John, hanged himself in his Manahawkin home in 1935.

Death of Westfall Sandlin at Camp Dix, 1937

New Jersey Courier 1 Sep 1937 Westfall Sandlin, 14, who was missing for two days from his home in Camp Dix, was found dead in one of seven sewage disposal tanks on the reservation, at 7.30 on Thursday evening. The tank is 75 feet long and 12 feet in depth. It is believed he fell into the tank accidentally. The boy's father, First Sergt. Matthew Sandlin, of Co. E, 18th Infantry, and Capt. Edward T. O'Neill, provost marshall of the camp, found the body. Coroner George Whomsley, of Burlington, said death was due to accidental drowning. Young Sandlin went to visit friends in Pointville and when he did not return his parents learned the boy had never reached the designation. It was believed he might have gone hitch-hiking when word reached the state police that Clarence Cliver, 15, of Pointville, with whom young Sandlin was friendly, also had disappeared from his home. Murder at Ellisdale, 1937

New Jersey Mirror 28 Jul 1937: Enraged because his wife had bobbed her hair, Joseph Cawley, 55 years old, a laborer, of Ellisdale, shot and severely wounded her on Monday, and then committed suicide with a shotgun. Mrs. Cawley, 45 years old, and the mother of four grown children, was hurried to Mercer Hospital, Trenton, by her son-in-law, Arthur Grover, of Extonville, where it was found that her right hand had been shot three times, and that she had suffered numerous bruises of her face and body where the enraged husband had kicked her. The argument occurred in front of the Cawley home and was witnessed by neighbors. As told by Mrs. Cawley to Grover, the husband asked her to step outside to discuss the matter. They walked through the yard, talking and arguing when suddenly Mrs. Cawley tripped over a broom that she had been carrying.. Suicide at Archertown, 1937

New Jersey Mirror, 24 Feb 1937: Mrs. Mary Collis, 50 years old, wife of Edward Collis, farmer of Archertown, near here, was found hanging in a shed off the kitchen of her home on Wednesday afternoon. Toms River State Police declared it a case of suicide. Collis, who discovered the body suspended from the rafter in the shed, could give no reason for his wife ending her life. Dr. Raymond Taylor, of Lakewood, Ocean county coroner, said the woman had been dead about two hours. Except for her husband, Mrs. Collis leaves no immediate survivors.
