The day Mrs. Pierson nearly drowned

New Jersey Courier 21 Jul 1916 Pulmotor Saved Life of Woman Thought to be Drowned Mrs. Pierson of Brooklyn, daughter in law of JE.P. Pierson of the Lakehurst road, narrowly escaped death on Tuesday afternoon while bathing in the brook at Wright's bridge. To the pulmotor is given the credit of her still being alive and well by Dr. Frank Brouwer. Mrs. Pierson and her family came down from Brooklyn on Sunday to spend the summer on the farm. With some friends Tuesday afternoon she went bathing in the stream, lost her footing and was swept downstream. She had been under water some time when her friends reached her and pulled her out. They sent for a doctor and at the same time started work trying to revive her. When Dr. Brouwer reached there with the pulmotor, she is said to have been to all appearances beyond resucitation; but the pulmotor pumped oxygen and life into her lungs and in a little while the color came back to her face and natural breathing was resumed.

Tragedies at the shore

From the New Jersey Courier of 14 Jul 1916: TWO LADS DROWN; SHARK GOT THREE MORE BATHERS First Drowning of Summer at Barnegat Pier Sunday Lewis Stoer, aged 19 years, was drowned at Barnegat Pier on Sunday while swimming. The body was recovered Monday and taken to his home at Palmyra. The boy's mother was prostrated by the shock. Stoer with his father, John Stoer, his brother Roy, and three friends, Frank and Conrad Windish, and Austin Raymond, came to the Pier on the Sunday excursion train for a days outing. Three of the lads went in swimming. Lewis swallowed a lot of water and seemed to be in difficulty, and the other two swam to him and held him up. He told them he was all right, but wh en they let go of him he went down and did not come up again. This was about 2:30 on Sunday afternoon. The body was found by Capt. Holmes Van Note on Monday at noon. Coroner Shuts gave a burial permit and his brother took the body home. WILL HARROP DROWNED IN ALMONESSON LAKE, MONDAY Will

Abraham Johnson suicide, 1865

New Jersey Mirror 13 JUL 1865 Abraham Johnson, of Pemberton, committed suicide, on Wednesday, by drowning himself in the mill pond at that place. He had intimated to an acquaintance that he would be carried home when he went there, and after he had been missed sometime, search was made, the pond dragged, and his body found. Intemperance was the cause. He leaves a wife and several children. He at one time owned the stage-line from Vincentown to Mount Holly.

Drowning of Barney Mulholland, 1866

From the New Jersey Mirror 4 Jan 1866 Barney Mulholland, an Irishman, aged about 28 years, was found drowned, in a small pond in "Polly Cox's Swamp," in Westampton, on Friday last.--The pond was about seven feet in length, three or four feet wide, and the water not more than six inches deep. He was lying upon his face, and his head had been thrust as far into the mud as possible. He was entirely naked--his clothes being up a few feet from him, carefully folded up. The deceased had been married about six weeks. He owned a small house in the neighborhood. He had doubtless been out of his mind for sometime previous to his death, as he had frequently said that he was called to preach the gospel, but that he had been commanded to give his clothes away before proceeding upon his mission. The Coroner, Benjamin Peterson, held the Inquest.

death of Dennis McElhinney

New Jersey Courier 14 Nov 1930 A diver who spent Thursday and Friday of last week trying to find the body of Dennis McElhinney, in the bay between Dutch's Inn and the Bay Draw, gave it up on Friday night and did not return on Saturday, having found no trace of McElhenney. The missing man, believed to have drowned, was last seen at Dutch's Inn, on Saturday, Oct 25, with a strong northwest gale blowing. It is understood, from the story told by his companion, that he had been drinking and was taken by George W. Alsheimer that day and cared for, till he insisted on leaving with his chum, about dusk, when the latter came back from a gunning point to see how McElhinney was getting on. What happened after that is a confused story. McElhinney is supposed to have fallen in the bay and to have drowned. The diver, Ray Hensen, on Thursday had a tear in the sleeve of his diving suit and so was in the water only about three hours. He waded about near Dutch's Inn dock. Next day he put

Drowning in Croswicks Creek

from the New Jersey Mirror 15 Jul 1875 Two men from Trenton named Gamble and Dirth were upset in Crosswick's Creek near Bordentown on Thursday night last, while fishing. Their boat capsized and Gamble, being an excellent swimmer, struck out for the shore, while Dirth, not knowing how to swim clung to the boat. Gamble was drowned and Dirth was saved. Gamble's body was found in the creek at Bonaparte's old wharf on Sunday. The body was much decomposed. Coroner Beatty of Mercer County held an inquest Monday morning.
