Junior KKK in Ocean County, 1923

New Jersey Courier 19 Oct 1923 JUNIOR K.K.K NOW Branches of Junior Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, which recently had its inception in Indiana, are being organized in Monmouth and Ocean Counties. The work has been in progress in this section about three weeks and already it is said about 500 youths have been enrolled. Boys between the ages of 12 to 18, sons of the members of the K.K.K. or sons of the Royal Riders of the Red Robe are eligible to membership, the latter, of course, if they have been born in this country. The boys have a regalia said to be somewhat like that of the K.K.K.

Perry Simmons obituary, 1862

New Jersey Mirror 13 Feb 1862 Perry Simmons, the colored man, whose attempted arrest as a fugitive slave, on two occasions, created considerable excitement in our neighborhood, died in Timbuctoo, a week or two ago. Perry had not been well since the last attempt to capture him, in consequence of taking a severe cold on that freezing night. It will be recollected that he was forced to fly suddenly from his bedroom to the garret, where he was obliged to remain till morning, suffering severely from the cold. Perry is at last beyond the reach of his Southern master.

SHOOTING OF NEGROES IS APPARENTLY EXPLAINED, 1929

New Jersey Courier on 26 Jul 1929: SHOOTING OF NEGROES IS APPARENTLY EXPLAINED Last week Lonnie Hammond, a South Toms River negro, created some excitement with a story of being fired at from the brush by some unknown assailant. He was found with some six buckshot in his legs. With Hammond was Willie Parker, of North Carolina. The rest of the story seems to be told by John Hen Witzel, who said he had been missing chickens, and set a gun to guard his roost-and the gun went off. A cap belonging to one boy was found near Witzel's. The two boys are being held for attempted robbery.
