Drag racing at Double Trouble, 1958

New Jersey Courier 2 Oct 1958 Drag racing has gone about as big time as it can go in Berkeley township, despite frequent raids by Berkeley township Police chief Samuel Britton and State Police. Chief Britton, who recommended the Berkeley Township Committee notify the state Division of Motor Vehicles, said the drag races have been going on all summer on two "strips" in the township. One strip is on the Keswick Road near Double Trouble, and the other is on Bayview Avenue between Holly Park and Ocean Gate.

NEW JERSEY COURIER 28 AUG 1958 The Dover Township Committee acted Tuesday night to purchase the Kelly property on Horner street for $33,500 for the expansion of the township offices plus some added parking spaces. The committee introduced an ordinance authorizing purchase of the property and a public hearing will be held at the next meeting of the committee on September 9. The property is located on the west side of Horner street, adjacent to the municipal parking lot. It consists of a three-story building and is owned by Alma Kelly. It has approximatel 125 feet of frontage on Horner Street. According to Collin Applegate, Township Clerk, the house was built 45 or 50 years ago for Charles Gates by his father in law, Charles Forcanser. Mrs. Kelly is the former Alma Holmes, daughter of Captain Joe Holmes, a well known resident. Charles E. New Jersey Courier 5 Jun 1958 Andrew Dorchy, no address, pleaded innocent to a charge of non-support of his wife and children, who live in Lakewood. Claude R. Ouelette, San Francisco, pleaded innocent to a charge of atrocious assault and battery in Lakewood in connection with the alleged beating and stabbing of Mrs. Sylvia Rothenberg, Bronx, NY on April 18.

Henry Bell accused of mail fraud, 1958

New Jersey Courier 5 Jun 1958 Henry Bell, Manitou Park, was allowed to change a plea of no defense to innocent Thursday by Judge John Ewart. Bell pleaded no defense April 8 to a charge of conspiracy to defraud. A jury found William F. Geist, Dickinson Street, Toms River, innocent of the same charge on April 10. It had been alleged that Bell and Geist had conspired to collect insurance on a car that had been hidden in the wood and then reported stolen. In a motion to allow Bell to change his plea, Leonard L. Gomell, his attorney, argued that his client shouldn't be sentenced for an alleged act of which his partner had been found innocent
