Frank Smith obituary, 1985

from the Asbury Park Press 8 Nov 1985 Frank Smith, Sr., 68, of Hightstown, died Tuseday at home. Born in Townsend, VA, he lived in Cranbury Township before moving to Hightstown nine years ago. He was a truck driver for Wright's Roses, Cranbury for 23 years. Mr. Smith was a member of the St. Jane A.M.E. Church, Hightstown. His wife, Ethel, died in 1981. Surviving are two sons, Frank, Jr., West Peterborough, NH, and Gerry, Hightstown; a daughter, Eunice Laidler, Bristol, PA; a brother, Cecil Smith, Cranbury; three sisters, Mae Nina May and Leona Wright, both Townsend, VA; and Quientelia Smaw, Norfolk, VA; 14 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. Nathaniel Small Funeral Service, Irvington, is in charge of arrangements.

News From Colliers Mills, 1900

New Jersey Courier 4 Oct 1900: The seven year old daughter of Alfred Southard has been very sick with the whooping cough and pneumonia, but is somewhat better now. There are one hundred twenty five Italians picking cranberries at this place. Mrs. Caroline Smith of Trenton has been visiting her sister, Mrs. Jennie Reynolds the past week. Henry Lewis is suffering with a boil on his nose. Wiliam Cawley expects to get done picking cranberries this week. He will not have more than one hundred and fifty boxes, where he generally has five to eight hundred boxes. James Buckalew, George Vannote, and Benjamin Buckalew killed nine wood duck Saturday last.

Smith arrested after fight, 1929

New Jersey Courier 23 Aug 1929 JAILED AFTER ROW An attempt at revenge is charged by Frank Johnson, negro of South Toms River, against William Smith, who was sentenced to 20 days in the county jail, on a disorderly charge by Recorder William R. Leary yesterday. The quarrel arose originally over liquor which Smith believed Johnson took from him. Smith was committed in default of a $15 fine.

News From Double Trouble, 1905

From the New Jersey Courier 18 May 1905 Hot, with plenty of mosquitoes. W. Dayton moved his family to New Gretna last week. Machinist Smith of Elmer, is with us again for a few days. We are glad to notice the improvements being made on the Double Trouble road. Howard Lee is off duty on account of sickness. E.E. Thompson received an ugly gash on his left hand while working on the bench saw. It is rumored that Berkeley Township intends building a new school house. We are anxiously awaiting to hear the carpenter's hammer. Gertrude Estlow is sick with the measles. Dr. Jones was a Monday visitor here. Clarence Saulsman and Ralph Shaw spent Sunday with relatives in Forked River. Mrs. Johnston of Whitesville came in last Tuesday with a load of pigs. Fred Applegate spent a fortnight in Toms River. Mac McKenney is building an addition to his cottage. Warren Van Brunt is spending a short time at Forked River with his parents. J.L. Madison spent Sunday in Toms River.
