The Lakewood Water, Light and Power Company have just finished an artesian well and will begin another at once. The first train to Lakewood from New York on the morning after election had it's engine covered with brooms. Mrs. PRICE, a German woman living near Lakewood, had her pocket picked of $50 while attending a vendue recently. A horse belonging to James H . News From Bayville 1878

New Jersey Courier 12 Dec 1878 The large residence of Mr. Cornelius Lawrence caught fire on Saturday evening last, about six o'clock, from a defective flue. Mr. Lawrence was returning from Toms River and on nearing the house discovered the fire on the roof. He quickly gave the alarm and this was the first intimation the inmates received of their danger. The neighbors saw the work of destruction going on and at once repaired to the burning building and saved all of the furniture, and in fact everything but part of Mr. Lawrence's wardrobe and that of his housekeeper, Mrs. Josephine Troy, who also lost some jewelry and $20 cash. The lost articles were in the attic. Hundreds of buckets of water were thrown upon the wagon house and corn crib which were thusly saved. I was informed by Mr. Lawrence that the building was insured for $1200 and that $2500 would be required to replace it.

Accident near Bear Swamp, 1881

Hunterdon Democrat 7 Jun 1881 A serious accident occurred on the Pennsylvania Railroad, at Bear Swamp, near Trenton, on Monday afternoon, to the fast train which leaves New York at 3:15, consisting of an engine, baggage car, Pullman car, and three other cars. It was caused by a misplaced switch; the engine, the baggage and Pullman cars passed over safely, but the three other cars left the track, one completely overturning and about a dozen passengers were more or less injured. One old lady, Lucretia Pennington, aged 81 years, died of her injuries about 6 o'clock. Mr. Augustus B. Ritter, of Philadelphia, was killed by the truck being forced through the bottom of the car.
