Bailey (or Baily) Family of South Jersey

  The following information was provided to me by  lexconsulting@cox.net , at my old rootsweb website and she would appreciate any input anyone out there has concerning this family. STEPHAN BAILY was born Abt. 1836 in New Jersey, and died prior to 1880. He married JEMIMA A. HEAD January 14, 1856 in Washington Twp., Burlington County, New Jersey, daughter of GEORGE HEAD and ELIZABETH CONNER. She was born March 18, 1828 in Burlington County, New Jersey, and died August 17, 1917 in Glassboro, Gloucester County, New Jersey. Nugentown 1915 Census

Nugentown, 1915 Below is the State Census taken in June of 1915 in the village of Nugentown. I have tried where possible to give as much information as I can find on each of these families by way of annotating the census, rather than just listing the data in a table. There were 24 occupied dwellings in Nugentown in 1915, and around 90 residents total. JOHN H. KOHLER FAMILY John H. Kohler was born in Kentucky in N ov 1867. Both of his parents were from Germany. In 1915, he was residing in the town of Nugentown and working as a farmer. H Is wife, Harriet, wsa born in Apr 1868 in England. Living with them in 1915 was a young man named William McGarry--he was born in Nov 1897, making him just about 18 at this time. He was born in New York; William's father was from Ireland and his mother from England. His relationship with John Kohler isn't clear, but there is another person in the house: Mary Kohler, born Aug 1899. In 1920, when the family was living on Clay

taken from the Gloucester County Times on December 24, 1943 Mrs. Susie A. Mathis Mrs. Susie A. Mathis, widow of Theodore Mathis, died on Friday. She was 80 years old. Born in Egg Harbor, Mrs. Mathis lived most of her life in Glassboro and was widely known in that community. Surviving are six children. They are Mrs. Ella Mae Wickward, of Gloucester; Mrs. Wilhelmina Cossabone of Camden; Stephen Mathis, Mrs. S. Nevada Adams and Mrs. Charlesanna A. Long, of Glassboro and Eugene V. Mathis, of Vineland; There are 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also surviving. The Rev. William A. Robbins, pastor of the Trinity Protestant Church, will conduct the services at 11 A.M. Tuesday from the Albert D. Mathis Funeral Home, 43 N. Delsea Drive, Glassboro with burial in Trinity cemetery. TUCKERTON BEACON 11 Mar 1920 Mrs. James A. Parker and children, Garrett and Gladys have returned after spending the winter at Bradley Beach, where her husband is employed in the C.G.S. F.S. Parker recently spent a week in Camden at the home of his son, Vere. Miss Estella Cummings, of Camden, spent the week end as the guest of Miss Grace Parker. Mrs. Ayer Parker and daughter, Mrs. Wm. Thomas spent a day in Tuckerton last week as the guest of Mrs. Darnell Parker. Adam Price, who is employed in Camden, was a Sunday visitor at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mason Price. Chas. A. Mathis spent the week end with his family here. Solomon Holman, who is employed in Philadelphia, was a week end guest of Miss Helen Parker. The following Adams family info comes to me from a visitor to my site, ,Jmjcmink. He tells me that he has ancestors from Washington Township and provided this little family info to me: Franklin Adams was the husband of Mary Ann Mathis; he is buried in the Miller Cemetery at New Gretna. Franklin and Mary Ann had a number of children. They were: Willard Adams, who married Laura Falkinburgh Blanchard Adams Calvin Adams Alfred Adams Charlotte Adams Elizabeth Adams, who married Charles Deacon Eugene Adams Mary Adams, who married John Gray Alvah Adams Walter Adams an unnamed child, who apparently died in infancy Unfortunately, I was not provided with any dates for these individuals. Frank Adams of Bass River

Another Adams who owned a hotel is mentioned in Bass River Township in the New Jersey Courier of December 30th, 1868. It describes him thusly: "Frank Adams keeps a small but comfortable hotel, dispenses whiskey, Ayer's medicines, post office, and sausage meat with a liberal hand, and keep a nice little home for strangers.". UPDATE: Thanks to Wynn for this new bit of information: Franklin Adam's uncle was the original owner of " The old Bass River Hotel". His name was Isaiah Adams, son of David and Hope (Rockhill) Adams. He Married Mary Ann Mathis, daughter of Daniel Mathis. Franklin's parents were Moses and Charlotte (Myers) Adams. Moses and Isaiah are the children of David Adams and Hope Rockhill. David is the son of Charles Adams and Hannah Jenkins. Charles is the son of Hezekiah Adams. Franklin's children are: Charles E., Jesse, Henry, Irick.
