Dr. Charles Porter performs abortion that results in death of his wife, 1873

Lakewood Times and Journal 18 Jul 1874 AN ABORTION CASE IN BRICKSBURG ----- THE PERPETRATOR FLED TO PARTS UNKNOWN On Saturday last a death occurred in this village which, though not attracting special notice at the time beyond a very limited circle, has since been found to involve consequences of grave importance and tragical character. Evidence has been found that prove that a heinous crime has been committed --a crime of that class of which happily our citizens know very little from actual knowledge or experience, but which the spread of public intelligence through the press demonstrates to be of fearfully frequent occurrence. Want of space in this issue compels brevity in a preliminary statement; besides, the leading facts of the case are fully given in the accompanying report of the evidence taken before the Coroner's jury. On Tuesday morning last the suspicions of several of our leading citizens had been excited by the divulging of certain circumstances connected with the dea...

Railroad comes to Cream Ridge, 1866

New Jersey Courier 6 Dec 1866 "The Pemberton and Hightstown Railroad Company have contracted for the grading of the road, with the firms of Collins and Company, and Rehill, Dolan, and Banford.  Ground will be broken at Hornerstown this week. The road will be completed next July, and will open up a section called Cream Ridge, which is said to contain some of the best farm land in the state.  Chief Engineer, Asahbel Welsh; President, James W. Allen; First Assistant, Wm. F. Allen; second Assistasnt, J.H. Lukens"

Joseph Smith preached at Cream Ridge

According to the Ocean Emblem of 18 Jun 1863, Joseph Smith once preached at Cream Ridge: "...it is many years since the disciples of this faith first introduced their service in this county, and the school house is still standing, on Cream Ridge...where Joe Smith once promulgated his doctrine..."

Strange town names of the mid-19th century

The Ocean Emblem of 21 Sep 1859 mentions some of what it calls the 'queer names of villages in this section of the state', which appears to be around Allentown.   "...we attended church in the morning at Screaming Hill, and in the afternoon at Cream Ridge, and spent the night in the suburbs of Skunktown, a village of blacksmithing importance.." It goes on to mention the writer visited Back-Bone-of-the-World (near Recklesstown and Ezekiel's Folly), Glory Hole (a village consisting of three houses and a barn), Scrabbletown, Shelltown, Foolstown, Bustletown, Turpentine (now Unionville), Frogtown, Ong's Hat, Mount Jemima, Devils' Run, Mount Misery, Comical Corner, Stop-the-Jades, Sandtown, Slabtown (now Jacksonville)
