Smoker at the Riverside House, 1900

New Jersey Courier 4 Jan 1900 Harry Eno is probably the son of Byron Eno, who ran a hotel in Lacey.  He was born Aug 1869 in PA and worked as a 'hotel proprietor'. He lived (probaby at the hotel) with parents, Byron E. and Mary), as well as sister Bertha (b. Sep 1871), brother Russel (b. May 1878), and Katie A. (who is Byron's daughter in law, though it's not clear on the census if she's married to Harry or Russel). There is a young  Byron E. (not yet 1), though again, it's not clear who's son he is.  R.C. Eno could be Harry's brother, Russel.  Daniel Holmes appears a few entries away from the Eno hotel on the 1900 census in Lacey.  He was born Dec 1869, and lived with his mother, Carolyn, and sister, Lydia B. (b. Aug 1877), and aunt Margaret Jeffrey (b. Mar 1841). It is not clear who Dr. Wallace is---I found a lot of Wallaces in Lacey in 1900, but none of them were doctors. Likewise with Eugene Bunnell--while that family name is common in Ocean County,...

News From Bayville 1879

New Jersey Courier 3 Jul 1879 Our farmers are in luck at present as all kinds of farm crops are growing nicely. Chas. S. Grant has, in our opinion, the banner corn field of the shore townships. The huckleberry harvest has begun. A few shipments have already been made from here The asparagus crop is about ended. David Ward has been sending from 75 to 100 bunches a day for the last two months. James P. Lewis, from less than an acre of land, has sent from 35 to 50 bunches per day. C.F. Bunnell is rebuilding his residence here, and the new church has been treated to a coat of paint.

Crime News from 1917

New Jersey Courier 20 Apr 1917 Friday Judge Jeffrey received the plea of a number of prisoners, and fixed bail. Joseph P. Johnson of West Point Pleasant, charged with beating up his wife, and the mother of his children, Bessie Johnson, pleaded not guilty. Trial was set for April 30. Having no one to go his bail, but owning real estate, he was allowed to go on his recognizance, and Arthur P. Gallagher of Lakewood, was assigned to defend him. Acton and George Bunnell of Cedar Creek, indicted at a previous term for malicious mischief, were allowed to give bail in the sum of $200, to appear for trial on April 23. They were charged by Frank W. Briggs, proprietor of the Greyhound Inn, Forked River, with damaging his electric light plant. Howard Applegate, a former owner of that hotel, went their bail. Charles Willey, colored, pleaded guilty to stealing some $60 from the money drawer of the Manhattan hotel, Lakewood, where he was employed as bellhop. He was caught by Charles Hecht, proprie...
