News From Bay Head, 1929

NJC 6 SEP 1929 The high powered cruising sea skiff Audrey, from Bay Head, coming thru the draw on the county bridge last Sunday afternoon, crashed into a rowboat in which were a man and a woman crabbing. The Audrey had aboard her owner, C.A. Nicklas of No. 6 Church Street, New York and Spring Lake, with a party of Spring Lake friends. Her sailing master is Capt. Charles G.I. Gifford They seemed to be in a hurry and had blown repeatedly for the draw to open, while still some distance off. They had just come through the draw when they hit the rowboat. In the small boat were Mr. and Mrs. John G. Duner of New Brunswick, and a dog. Mrs. Duner clung to the wrecked rowboat; the dog was killed and Duner was aided by a sailor who plunged overboard from the San-Cath-Ann, of Allenhurst, which moors at Mantaloking. The San-Cath-Ann crew took both the D uners aboard and ran them ashore at the Dutch's Inn dock. It is understood that Nicklas settled the damages. Dr. Frank Brouwer of Toms River to

Nugentown 1915 Census

Nugentown, 1915 Below is the State Census taken in June of 1915 in the village of Nugentown. I have tried where possible to give as much information as I can find on each of these families by way of annotating the census, rather than just listing the data in a table. There were 24 occupied dwellings in Nugentown in 1915, and around 90 residents total. JOHN H. KOHLER FAMILY John H. Kohler was born in Kentucky in N ov 1867. Both of his parents were from Germany. In 1915, he was residing in the town of Nugentown and working as a farmer. H Is wife, Harriet, wsa born in Apr 1868 in England. Living with them in 1915 was a young man named William McGarry--he was born in Nov 1897, making him just about 18 at this time. He was born in New York; William's father was from Ireland and his mother from England. His relationship with John Kohler isn't clear, but there is another person in the house: Mary Kohler, born Aug 1899. In 1920, when the family was living on Clay

Thomas Gifford obituary, 1900

from the New Jersey Courier 15 Dec 1900 Thomas M. Gifford died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Van Lew, Point Pleasant, on Wednesday, in his 67th year. The deceased was a veteran of the Civil War, and he was an active member of the G.A. R. Post. For many years past he had held the office of constable. Four daughters and a son survive him.
