"When Walter S. Davis, colored, of Mount Holly, was called for sentence before Judge Frank A. Hendrickson, sitting in special sessions court at the Court House on Thursday, Prosecutor Howard Eastwood reported that the defendant was dead. Davis died in the Burlington County Hospital on December 7th from pneumonia, a report from the institution said. The defendant was under indictment for atrocious assault and battery on Albert Cromwell at the home of George Garrison, 225 Chestnut street, Mount Holly. During an argument, Davis drew a knife and cut Cromwell in the body, causing a wound that required 17 stitches to close. He pleaded guilty to the charge on November 23 and sentence was deferred until last Thursday. A record of Davis' death was entered on the court records."
