Ellisdale

Ellisdale

This place is located in North Hanover Township, Burlington County, along
appropriately enough, Ellisdale Road. Maps indicate that there is a cemetery there,
although I have not been out that way myself yet.
E.M. Woodward's 1883 history says that at that time there were about thirty dwellings in Ellisdale,
as well as an M.E. church, two stores, and a post office.

While I have been told that at some point this place was also known as Shelltown, it is not to be confused with the
place called Shelltown in Plumsted Township, Ocean County. Ellisdale was known
as Shelltown until about 1875.

According to another visitor here, Ellisdale is actually is a crossroads town, just a few houses. The town also straddles the county line (which goes up the Ellisdale-Arneytown road)
between Upper Freehold, Monmouth Co. and North Hanover, Burlington, co. The church is in Burlington, but the old store building, which was still a store in the early 60's and is now a home, is across
the street in Monmouth. There is a Methodist church there still, celebrating its 150th anniversary this May (2002). The Old Friends Meeting house down the road towards
Walnford was first made into a school house, and then a private dwelling. It is 300 years old and was recently renovated. The addition end of it was added in 1947. A picture of it as a dwelling c. 1930 can be found in the book Fare to Midlands by Henry C. Beck and in the new picture book of Allentown by Randal Gabralson
(not sure how to spell that); there is one of it as a school before it was moved to its present location.
