Bass River, 1876
Bass River has changed very little, during the last decade; yet increased attention to agriculture is manifest on every hand. Pretty farms, neat residences, and school houses that will compare favorably with localities much more pretentious, give evidence that the population is at once intelligent and industrious. The school house, associated with which are so many tender memories of lessons conned, and extreme elementary ideas worked in by the aid of old fashioned licking stimulators, seemed as of old, though, wearing a more modern appearance and a more euphoneous name than "Frogtown Schoolhouse." Miss Eva Robinson, a lady of desirable properties, is the present teacher, and I understand is doing a good work educationally.
"Mr. Mark Adams has charge of the New Gretna school. Of course, we can say nothing about what he will accomplish until he has been at work for some time, but we know that his intelligence is sufficient to bring up his school to a high grade. He ought to be successful, for he has manifested good judgment in getting a better half and building a neat, comfortable home for her. Rev. Mr. Enoch Adams, a veteran in the church, and a model farmer, still occupies his old homestead.
"The late storm was disastrous in it's effects, principally destroying the hay crop. About five hundred tons went flying on the wings of the wind. One gentleman lost all his summer's work.
"Capt. Duff Caviller, of Bridgeport, and crew, were lost during the late gale. Capt. C's brother and a son of Capt. Frank McKenne were among the crew.
"Now it would be highly improper to write an article about Bass River and not speak of my jolly host, Frank Adams.. He is as hearty as ever, and I think he is better looking, at least so some one remarked. But of course we could not be fully satisfied without calling upon our friend Levi, for Levi is a character full of fun, brimful of wit; no wonder that good nature has promoted adipose deposit in him. We are only concerned about him in one particular. Too much 'reform' is bad for the brain, you know. Now if Levi could change his spots he would become the noble man. His brother Frank has been nominated for Surrogate. Well, though we are of unlike political stripe, yet no man of our acquaintance could tempt us to split as quickly as could Frank
