Strange town names of the mid-19th century
The Ocean Emblem of 21 Sep 1859 mentions some of what it calls the 'queer names of villages in this section of the state', which appears to be around Allentown.
"...we attended church in the morning at Screaming Hill, and in the afternoon at Cream Ridge, and spent the night in the suburbs of Skunktown, a village of blacksmithing importance.."
It goes on to mention the writer visited Back-Bone-of-the-World (near Recklesstown and Ezekiel's Folly), Glory Hole (a village consisting of three houses and a barn), Scrabbletown, Shelltown, Foolstown, Bustletown, Turpentine (now Unionville), Frogtown, Ong's Hat, Mount Jemima, Devils' Run, Mount Misery, Comical Corner, Stop-the-Jades, Sandtown, Slabtown (now Jacksonville)
