Tragedies at the shore
From the New Jersey Courier of 14 Jul 1916:
TWO LADS DROWN; SHARK GOT THREE MORE BATHERS
First Drowning of Summer at Barnegat Pier Sunday
Lewis Stoer, aged 19 years, was drowned at Barnegat Pier on Sunday while swimming. The body was recovered Monday and taken to his home at Palmyra. The boy's mother was prostrated by the shock.
Stoer with his father, John Stoer, his brother Roy, and three friends, Frank and Conrad Windish, and Austin Raymond, came to the Pier on the Sunday excursion train for a days outing. Three of the lads went in swimming. Lewis swallowed a lot of water and seemed to be in difficulty, and the other two swam to him and held him up. He told them he was all right, but wh en they let go of him he went down and did not come up again. This was about 2:30 on Sunday afternoon. The body was found by Capt. Holmes Van Note on Monday at noon. Coroner Shuts gave a burial permit and his brother took the body home.
WILL HARROP DROWNED IN ALMONESSON LAKE, MONDAY
Will Harrop, aged 21 years, son of John Harrop, formerly of Toms River, and grandson of the late Martin Fischer of this place, was drowned Monday night while bathing in Almonesson Lake. The Harrops have made their home in Woodbury for some years past. Will went with a friend for a swim in the lake, was taken with cramps, and went under, according to the story as it reaches his relatives here. He had just graduated from the Wenonah Military Academy, was over six feet tall, and was in demand as a pitcher in baseball games around Camden. He was a nephew of Township clerk Theodore Fischer.
SHARK KILLS TWO MORE; THIRD BOY LOST LEG
While swimming in Matawan Creek, not far from its mouth in Raritan Bay, 12 year old Lester Stillwell of Matawan was killed by a shark Wednesday. W. Stanley Fisher, aged 25, who went to rescue the lad, was also killed and Joseph Dunn, aged 10, had one leg mangled by apparently the same creature. Four deaths from sharks in less than two weeks has caused a reign of terror along the whole Jersey coast.
