Former Forked River Pastor's Widow is 100 Years Old Today
Mrs. Emma Aspinwall, a resident of Forked River for 40 years before she moved to Chatham in 1949, is celebrating her 100 birthday today. Mrs. Aspinwall was born in 1852 in the little town of Sauqouit near Utica, NY.
She is the widow of the late Rev. Nathan Aspinwall, who served the Forked River Methodist from 1909 to 1915, again from 1916 to 1920, and later from 1922 to 1924.
Mrs. Aspinwall left Forked River about three years ago and now resides with her niece and nephew, Mr. and Mrs. Carleton F. Bolles, of Chatham. For 27 years she was a neighbor of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brouwer, Main St, Forked River. Mrs. Aspinwall was active around h er home until she m oved away. It was a common sight to see her working out in the yard raking leaves or tending to her garden.
She was also very active in the church and community activities in Forked River. She hardly ever missed a church service and knitted numerous afghans for veterans at Lyons Hospital. She also crocheted rag rugs and only recently was forced to wear glasses. Reading was another of her favorite hobbies.
Mrs. Aspinwall was 12 years old when her brother left to fight in the Civil War and has never forgotten the regiment leaving or seeing General U.S. Grant some years later when he made a tour of the country.
Seh attended district school in Souquoit as well as the academy there and went on to Syracuse University in 1884 and 1885 where she studied music. Later she became a music teacher and was before that a grade school teacher at the age of 16 but gave it up as she didn't enjoy the profession.
A reception was held at the Chatham Methodist Church last Sunday in honor of the occassion. Mrs. Aspinwall was present to greet many friends made during the century she has lived.
